Men's quarters bring Thursday thunder.

10.09.2009
Two men’s quarterfinals headline play on Day 11 of the 2009 US Open, as No. 3 seed Rafael Nadal takes on No. 11 seed Fernando Gonzalez, and No. 6 seed Juan Martin del Potro squares off with Marin Cilic, the No. 16 seed. Four men, three wins away from one of tennis’ most prestigious titles. Expect intensity. With the finish line in sight, this is no time to lose focus.

Nadal began this year with a bang, taking his sixth career Slam title at the Australian Open and following that up with another hard-court tourney win at Indian Wells. All told, the 23-year-old Spaniard owns five tournament titles this year—tied with Andy Murray for most among the men. But aching knees have been the Achilles heel of Nadal in 2009. He lost his first-ever match at Roland Garros after winning the French title four years running, then was unable to defend his Wimbledon title. Off the tour for some two months, the former No. 1 came back to tennis just in time to play two Olympus US Open Series events—in Montreal and Cincinnati—before heading to Flushing, reaching the quarters of the first and semis of the second. A win here would complete a career Grand Slam for Nadal, but for all of his success at the other Slams, he’s never been beyond the semis here in six tries. His remarkable string of success at Roland Garros gave many the impression that he couldn’t handle the hard stuff, but in truth, Nadal has an outstanding career mark on cement. He’s 176-55 on hard courts through four rounds here. The No. 3 seed played his most impressive match of the tournament in round four, roaring back after dropping the first set to Gael Monfils, ousting the 13th seed, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3. In that match, Nadal looked particularly precise, putting 74 percent of his first serves into play, winning 73 percent of his first-serve points and breaking his opponent eight times. Equally important, he was moving exceptionally well, running down balls like a Golden Retriever hopped up on caffeine.

The Spaniard will need to sustain that level of play against Gonzalez, who’s played his way into the quarters here for the second time in his career. The 29-year-old Chilean has now reached the quarters or better at all four majors in his career; his best-ever Slam showing a runner-up finish at the 2007 Australian Open. Gonzalez, who has been ranked as high as No.5, is a gritty fighter, never more evident than in his win over No. 7 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. After dropping the first set there, Gonzalez employed a lethal ground assault that eventually wore down one of the most athletic players on the men’s tour. Gonzalez can go toe-to-toe off the ground with just about anyone, but when it comes to launching bombs from the baseline, no one has an edge on Nadal.

This figures as a heavyweight slugfest between two of the game’s premier punchers. Earlier in this event, Nadal looked somewhat vulnerable, but with each match, he looks more like a legitimate threat to play through to Sunday. Nadal leads their career meetings 6-3, including wins in the gold-medal match at last year’s Beijing Olympics and the fourth round at this year’s Aussie Open. The points—and the match—will likely go long, but Nadal will likely play longer. In four, Nadal moves on. Last summer, del Potro arrived at the Open as the hottest player in men’s tennis, only to flame out in the quarters. This year, the 20-year-old Argentine seems particularly determined to improve upon that showing, dropping only one set to this point of the tournament. At 20 years, 11 months, del Potro is the youngest man in the top 10, but he plays a mature game that’s built on unyielding power and remarkable precision. The No. 6 seed notched his best-ever result at a Slam when he made the semis at Roland Garros this year. Del Potro took the title at the hard-court event in Auckland in January, and through four rounds here, he’s posted an impressive 31-6 mark on cement this year. His fourth-round win over 2003 US Open runner-up Juan Carlos Ferrero was the definition of dominance, as del Potro dictated play from the start, winning 81 percent of his first-serve points and answering everything that Ferrero threw his way.

His opponent today, Croatia’s Marin Cilic, posted one of the event’s more resounding upsets in taking out Andy Murray in round four. Cilic planted the No. 2 seed in convincing style, sweeping him out of the tournament in a straight-set lashing in which the Croat won 79 percent of his first-serve points and converted on five of nine break opportunities. Cilic’s big game dwarfed Murray’s every effort, and the win made him the first Croat to reach the US Open quarters since Goran Ivanisevic reached this point of the tournament in 1996. Cilic, 20, has won two tournament titles this year, finishing first at hard-court events in Chennai and Zagreb. But since Wimbledon, he’d won only one match in three events before arriving in Flushing. Del Potro won the only career meeting between the two, taking out Cilic in the fourth round of the Aussie Open earlier this year. Cilic has played extremely well to this point, but del Potro figures to play well beyond this point. Give Cilic a set, give del Potro the win. In four, he’s on to the semis.
